Last Thursday we enjoyed our last night of the What Does the Bible Say About Gay? Bible study. Predictably, as many questions were raised as were answered – attesting to the fact that the Bible isn’t as clear in its condemnation of homosexuality as some might have us believe.

In both 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy, Paul uses two words that many modern translations render as “homosexual.” For one of the words, this is a very modern (post 1946) translation. For the other, the word Paul uses is one he made up for the occasion, making it difficult to find what his contemporaries thought it meant.

If you would like to explore this idea with us, click here and download the notes from last week’s word study.

Thanks to everyone who participated in What Does the Bible Say About Gay?. Just because the study is over, however, doesn’t mean the conversation has to be…

During our most recent study, we walked through Paul’s cause/effect argument in Romans 1, a passage that is often troubling for modern gay Christians. But as we saw last Thursday, reading the passage with an ancient understanding changes everything.

Our next What Does the Bible Say About Gay? will be on December 3. At this last study in the series, we’ll read through 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 and 1 Timothy 1:9-10 and look at some interesting slang Paul invented for his 1st Century readers. Join us on Dec 3 to learn more!

If the abominable snowman is the biggest, worst snowman, are the sins the Bible calls “abominations” the biggest, worst sins?

In our bi-weekly Bible study, What Does the Bible Say About Gay?, we’re digging through history, language, culture, and law to find out why the Bible says what it says about homosexuality.

Last week we discussed two passages in Leviticus:

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22)

“If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.” (Leviticus 20:13)

These verses have been scrawled on protest signs, shouted at demonstrations, and preached from pulpits… usually in an attempt to remind gays of their abominable state. But is it possible that an “abomination” might not be the snowman of sins?

You can find out more by reading an outline from our last discussion. Click here to read the notes.

Join us on October 29 for our next Bible study! Details will be posted here next week.

Last Sunday we spent the morning talking about ourselves.

Over coffee and bagels we told stories about the churches we’ve attended. We talked about the good things, bad things, right things, and wrong things they taught us. With neither fear nor judgment, we delved into the past.

After all, how can we know where we’re going if we haven’t explored where we’ve been?

Stories were told. We giggled and cringed, sighed and cried at the journey that has brought us each to CCfB. But time was short and the janitor needed to put up the tables, so we packed our boxes and left before there was really time to finish.

But maybe this is a good forum to continue the discussion. If you couldn’t be with us on Sunday – or even if you were at CCfB and would like to reflect a little further – share a few sentences of your story with us. Choose one (or two… or three) of the sentences below and complete it by telling us how the church you were raised in formed your current views about God, yourself, and your world:

My church taught me that God is…

My church taught me that I am…

My church taught me that people are…

if you’d like 5 bonus points, reflect on your answers to the top three questions and use that info to answer: “Because of this, I now need my church to…”
